Poor by Choice!
...because living for money is a horrible way to live
11th-Jun-2006 11:26 pm
I like the ethic this group is based on, and while I think that it may be near impossible for me to carry out my life plans and not have a job. Ultimately I would like to set up clinics in northern india/tibet/nepal and I have had this dream for 6 years now and will begin medical training next year. However, becoming a doctor (trauma surgeon) is a hard choice for me because of a lot of the issues that surround it, mainly the drug companies, but also general mindset/practice of current medicine. So before I have a huge salary, I need to firmly instill the basics of minimal consumption and simple living or I could end up not saving enough money and never fulfilling this dream. So that is why I am here.

I am an anarchist, a christian, a vegan, and a future med student, and these are only the surface of seeming contradictions that I live in. Feel free to call me out or debate with me on any of this as I need to be questioned at this point in my life.

I saw that there were some issues with introductions before and thought it was a good idea to volunteer one, though I agree with removing the mandatory introduction.

I am interested in urban/home gardening, dumpster diving, and other minimising actions I can take in my life that are somewhat impractical where I live now, but will be when i move to philly. I live out in the countryside now.

I think it will be important to use your training for purposes other than profit for pharmaceutical company/medical industry fat cats. Which I suppose is basically what you plan to do.
Ever considered setting up some sort of free clinic in your town?
Need any tips?

I plan on helping out at a free clinic that the med students at Temple run, but I don't know how it all works. In terms of big pharma, etc. the only realistic way of working as a 'normal' doctor and not playing their game would be to suggest as many herbal and lifestyle changes as possible before just throwing meds at them. I don't know how exactly I'd treat something like schizophrenia though.

You're right about starting something in whatever town I end up living in. Why wait until I can help out another part of the world? Do you have any advice on how to do that? Are you an actual doctor/medic/emt/etc? Also, I feel like being a trauma surgeon at a protest would come in pretty handy if it gets brutal.

No, I'm not any of those things. I meant, do you need any tips on being "poor by choice".

Being a street medic would definitely be an awesome thing to do.

yeah, I guess that's why I joined the group. I have been making a lot more of an effort since the beginning of the year to live a lot simpler. Going vegan has helped save me a lot of money, as has trying to borrow more often than buy. Also, I'm moving to a city so I can get rid of the cara nd walk/bike/mass transit my way around. So general advice like that would be appriciated.

Kind of irrelevant, but I found out that you know my girlfriend Emily (music_is_life). I like coinsidences.

get a job. but he can always ask mommy and daddy for money. why don't he come down to beaumont and work in the mechanic shop with us. we could always use another hand, as long as he learns to shut his mouth. mechanics make good money.

we're republicans and we don't wanna hear that crap.

First off, I do have a job, and I am going to school full time and I have huge school loans I am going to have to pay off. I pay my own rent/bills/food costs, etc from my poorly paying job at a produce stand, which is the only job i could hold down with the random times of the day i need to do something special for med school. But I love the job and would even do it for less money, but i would have a harder time meeting the bills.

I have worked many other jobs too, the closest to working as a mechanic that I have come is working in a warehouse for plumbing/electrical work, but please don't accuse me never having worked.

As for forcing you to live in communes, this is poor by CHOICE. I choose to live small, share a small studio apartment with someone else, and eat vegan. I choose to ride a bike and not try to pay for a car or bus/subway stuff. You, for example can probably fix your own car, which I would love to learn to do. I'm not begging for handouts or government help, in fact, the less I have to interact with a government, the better.

If you want to have a family and work as a mechanic and work overtime to have a boat at a lake (as an example), then that is your choice, this community is about living simply so we have more time to do as we please, and I subscribe to that idea so i like this community.

I guess I'm really not sure what you're upset about. I don't like republicanism, but i also don't like communism or the democratic party in the US or any other hierarchical governmental system for that matter.

I don't really know why you feel it is so important to try to start trouble on message boards. I don't even really know what you're saying I'm in denile about.

Also, you got the continent wrong in your witty reply.
4th-Nov-2006 05:03 am (UTC) - oh i am startin trouble
do you know who i am? did you serve in the military? let me ask you that boy or girl. you don't appreciate what life has given you, you want to be poor. in texas, if your poor your nothing. theres a big diff between being thrifty and wanting to be poor. ppl around the world would want what u have, but they don't.

why don't u read my page and learn more. why don't u come live in republican country if your so against the establishment?
